International News: U.S. shoots down Chinese balloon over Atlantic

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States has reportedly shot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon that was flying over U.S. airspace, BBC reports.

The U.S. reportedly closed 3 airports near South Carolina as the U.S. military planes targeted the object over the Atlantic.

Footage reportedly showed the balloon falling to the sea after an explosion.

U.S. President Joe Biden had faced pressure to shoot it down after it entered U.S. airspace.

In addition, the U.S. coast guard had urged mariners to leave that area due to military operations.

Chinese officials say that the airship deviated from its intended course.

 “The airship is from China and is civilian in nature, used for meteorological and other scientific research. Due to the influence of westerly winds and its limited control capability, the airship deviated from its intended course,” China’s Foreign Ministry said.

U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken said he had told Beijing the balloon’s presence was “a clear violation of US sovereignty and international law” and “an irresponsible act” on the eve of his visit to China.

Blinken has since postponed his trip to China.
