By Aaron Humes: Long lines are in place at the University of Belize Gymnasium, Belmopan, for today’s United Democratic Party (UDP) contested convention to select the divisional standard bearer.
Retired Colonel George Lovell has the endorsement of the party’s leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow and told reporters that while you may not see his supporters in party shirts, he believes he will have the numbers when the poll closes at 4 p.m. this evening.
Businessman Emil Torres insists he is the “new hope” that the party needs in the division and that he is bringing out the voters from the varied communities in the New Capital: Latino/immigrants, Maya, and central Belmopan. Torres is unfazed, saying that he is concentrating on getting the support of Belmopanese.
Meanwhile, John Saldivar carries the double burden of incumbency, being a former four-term area representative and a former Minister of Government, and the stain of the U.S. State Department designation that bars him from entering the U.S. based on charges of “significant corruption.”
Saldivar denies threatening to “come for” Barrow if he wins, saying he will work with him at this time and he is concentrating on serving his constituents and restoring the services he says have come to a halt for Belmopan families under incumbent area representative Oscar Mira.
We’ll have the results as they come in.
