By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 2, 2023, representatives from the San Ignacio Community Hospital (SICH) including Deputy Regional Manager; Nurse Myra Pulido, Chief of Staff; Doctor Janine Juarez, Nursing Supervisor; Nurse Alicia Rejon and Chief Pharmacist; Irma Sanchez visited the Medic outpost at Camp Belizario.
They were joined by medical representatives from the Belize Defence Force (BDF) Major Lydia Guerra MD, MMed, IM/ID (doctor/internist) and Corporal Lauren Young BSN, RN (registered nurse) for a tour of the facility and to identity how the hospital and the BDF can engage in collaborative efforts to improve the medical coverage for the soldiers stationed in the Cayo District.
The team later travelled to Price Barracks, Ladyville where they were greeted by the Force Medical Officer (FMO) Lieutenant Colonel Elfryn Reyes MD and Chief of Staff Lt Col Jermaine Burns.
After a tour of the Force Hospital, they visited with the Deputy Commander, Lt Col Ricardo Leal to discuss the establishment of a partnership between the BDF and San Ignacio Community hospital that will highlight ways to achieve the mutually beneficial goal of community outreach and improved medical services in the area.
The team were also hosted to a lunch by the BDF to show their gratitude for the support they have and continue to offer to the BDF.
The BDF Hospital and medical outposts offers medical services to all members of the BDF, their dependents, international military personnel training or stationed in Belize, as well as the surrounding community.
“The service of the highly trained medical staff in the BDF is indispensable not only for the members of the Force but for the country of Belize at large,” the BDF noted.
