Posted: Monday, February 6, 2023. 11:21 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Rescuers in Turkey and Syria are working arduously to find those trapped after a powerful 7.8 magnitude struck this morning, CNN reports.

More than 2,300 people have died and the quake left massive destruction in both nations.

The quake is one of the strongest tremors to hit the region.

Officials in Turkey report that about 1,498 people have died and thousands more are injured.

Syrian authorities have reported 820 deaths.

The epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude quake was 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Officials in both countries have reported aftershocks.

Videos and photos of the scenes show the devastation and destruction.

The quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939.
