By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A good while has elapsed since a Belize City side has led the Belize’s top-flight football league. In fact, no Belize City team that led any version of the present Premier League of Belize (PLB) is even existent. The last, FC Belize, simply faded away.
Since the beginning of the present Premier League of Belize Closing Championship, Port Layola have kept pace with the San Pedro Pirates and over the last two games have been commanding the PLB on goal difference over the islanders relegating Verdes and Altitude to second fiddle. And while they couldn’t muster more than a 1-1 draw against Benque Viejo United on Saturday in Benque, San Pedro also drew and that keeps the Belize City side comfortably in the driver’s seat with ten points.
Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton gave Port the lead in the 41st minute and it appeared they would get away from Benque Viejo del Carmen with a 1-0 win, but Danny Jimenez converted a very late penalty kick in the 90’+3’ to even things at 1-1.
San Pedro managed a 2-2 draw against champions Altitude in Independence leaving Port in command after three wins and a draw.
Benque Viejo United for their part now total four points from a win, a draw, and two losses. They find themselves in sixth place.
In the other games, Bandits drew 0-0 with Progresso in Belmopan, and Verdes beat Wagiya 3-1 in Dangriga.
