Sarteneja Football Club makes apology but claims players were defending themselves in on-field fracas

Posted: Monday, February 6, 2023. 9:05 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to Corozal Daily, the Sarteneja Football Club has issued a statement apologizing to their opponents, the general public, fans and organizers of the David Castillo Copa del Norte tournament for incidents caught on video during their match with Chunox F.C. on Sunday afternoon.

Fights broke out between players on the pitch, one involving a piece of stick.

According to the club, “we found ourselves in a situation where we had no choice but to try and defend ourselves from an attack where machetes and sticks were drawn.”

The statement claims the incidents began when “our [goal]keeper was slapped by an opposing player.” It adds that there were no police or other security available and suggests this would have made a difference.

Neither the organizers nor the Corozal Football Association (CFA) has publicly commented.
