By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, a judge in Nicaragua sentenced 4 Catholic priests to 10-year prison terms after they had been charged for “treason” and “spreading false news,” Reuters report.
Two seminarians studying for priesthood were also sentenced to 10 years on the same charges.
The men are a part of the Matagalpa diocese, led by Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was arrested alongside them last August.
“We condemn these perverse actions of the regime, which violate human rights,” the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights said.
The organization also called for their immediate release.
Human rights groups have accused President Daniel Ortega of targeting critical Catholic Church leaders following nationwide protests in 2018.
