Woman who pleaded guilty to stealing cell phone remanded to prison for unpaid fines

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City woman who pleaded guilty to theft has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison for not paying fines accumulated from previous convictions.

Twenty-five-year-old Celina Jones confessed to stealing a phone valued at $750 from a man she befriended. She was also charged for possession of a pipe used for smoking crack cocaine. Jones pleaded guilty to both charges and asked the court to consider the fact that she cooperated with the police investigation and handed over the phone when she was arrested.

For the offenses, she received two fines, $500 plus $5.00 cost of court for the theft, which she must pay by June 6 or face four months in jail; and $400 plus $5.00 cost of court for the pipe, which she must pay by May 15 or she will spend four months in prison for default.

But Jones was in debt to the court for $610.00 over two previous drug-related convictions and the Magistrate explained that she needed to pay at least half ($305) before she could leave.

Jones was unable to cover the amount and was remanded until she can do so.
