Ministry of Agriculture advises what to do to get rid of swarms of bees

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise’s (MAFSE) extension officers issued advice on what to do when a swarm of bees becomes a threat.

The Agriculture Ministry reported that on Monday its extension officers were called to take care of a bees’ nest near the Yo Creek Preschool in Orange Walk. However, MAFSE said that they have been receiving several complaints about bee swarms.

“As more and more complaints about bee swarms reach the Ministry, National Bee and Honey Coordinator, Mr. Miguel Huertas, would like to share the following information with the public regarding bees and how to remove swarms,” MAFSE said in a statement on social media.

The Ministry said capturing a swarm of bees can be dangerous and it’s best to seek professional help particularly if a person is inexperienced in the matter. However, if you need to take care of the matter, one needs to be careful and to be properly prepared to avoid injury.

The following is the list of steps to safely capture a swarm as recommended by The Incredible World of Bees and recommended by Huertas.

a) Protect your body: Wear protective clothing, such as a bee suit, and gloves.

b) Identify the location of the swarm: Find a visible and accessible place for the swarm.

c) Secure a suitable Bee box: Obtain a suitable size Bee box or Nuc with frames to set brood on frames if there is any and allow entrance for the swarm.

d) Calm the bees: Apply gentle white smoke on the swarm to calm the bees.

e) Carefully remove the swarm: Use a soft tool to remove the swarm from the tree or structure it is on and place it in the bee box.

f) Close the box: Cover the container to prevent the bees from escaping.
