PSU President rejects government’s plans for contributory pension scheme

Posted: Wednesday, February 8, 2023. 3:08 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Public Service Union (PSU) President, Dean Flowers, has stated that the government’s plan for a contributory pension scheme will not be supported by the union. Flowers expressed that “no current public sector worker, including teachers, police officers, and coast guards, will contribute to any contributory public funds”, and that “the Ministry of Finance needs to get that in their head”.

At the Joint Unions Negotiating Team (JUNCT) Press Conference on Tuesday, Flowers emphasized that the union’s position is firm and that they will ensure that no existing public sector worker contributes to the scheme. He added that the Ministry of Finance needs to understand this and that the scheme, when established, must be aimed at new public officers who will enter the service thereafter.

The PSU President also expressed concern about the lack of information regarding the scheme, saying that the government has not provided the necessary details and plan for the scheme, which is set to be rolled out by April 1, 2023, according to the Prime Minister.

Despite the Prime Minister’s announcement of the pension scheme, Flowers stated that it remains unclear how it will be achieved without a financial plan or a magician in the Prime Minister’s office.

The PSU is standing firm in its opposition to the government’s plan for a contributory pension scheme and is calling for further transparency and details to be provided.
