By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, officials in Haiti confirmed that suspected gangs had kidnapped journalist Jean Thony Lorthe, ABC News reports.
According to reports, on Friday, February 3, 2023, Lorthe and his brother were headed to a funeral when they were kidnapped in a neighborhood in Port-au-Prince.
The Association of Haitian journalists are demanding that the kidnappers release those that they kidnapped and noted that Lorthé’s family is unable to pay a ransom and that the journalist suffers from serious health problems.
“The widespread insecurity raging in the country, characterized by acts of murder, kidnappings and beatings, has a major impact on the profession of journalism in Haiti,” the association said.
In 2022, there were 1, 200 kidnappings in Haiti, more than double of what was reported in 2021.
Seven journalists were killed in Haiti in 2022.
