International News: Why Caribbean countries like Belize supporting Taiwan is Mainland China’s “worst nightmare”

Posted: Thursday, February 9, 2023. 11:16 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Indian-based news site TFI Global News is drawing attention to the handful of countries, including Belize, that continue to support the Republic of China (Taiwan) over the People’s Republic of China, despite the latter’s attempts to woo them.

Belize has consistently maintained its support of Taiwan’s presence on the world stage, including recently at the World Health Assembly, and has been rewarded with development funds to support the COVID-19 response and building of the new San Pedro Hospital, not to mention projects in infrastructure, education, and digital development.

TFI observes that with a steady fall in support, Taiwan has found much of its backing in the Caribbean and Central American region – Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Guatemala, and Honduras can all be counted among its supporters.

In the case of Belize, this has meant preferential treatment for goods in Taiwan under the new Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA) signed last September.

The consolidation of the partnership between Belize and Taiwan comes in the backdrop of repeated military aggressions and territorial expansions by China. Recently, Beijing conducted its largest-ever show of military strength in the air and seas around Taiwan, even firing ballistic missiles.

Beijing, which does not recognize the political sovereignty and territorial integrity of Taiwan, has made numerous endeavours to erode any diplomatic, political, and economic support for Taipei in any region, but its overtures have fallen flat with this stubborn group of countries. With its existence increasingly under threat, TFI concludes, Taiwan will continue to rely upon – and keep happy – those few diplomatic allies it has remaining.
