Prime Minister: Belize remains committed to environmental protection

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize is hosting the joint Annual Meeting of the Initiative 20×20, Bonn Challenge, and the Agriculture, Forest, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) 2040 in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

In response to the Bonn Challenge, Initiative 20×20, and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, Belize crafted its National Landscape Restoration Strategy in which over 382,592 hectares (945,405 acres) have been identified for restoration opportunities.

Prime Minister John Briceño says that Belize remain committed to environmental protection.

“Today, I addressed the UN Decade Bonn Challenge and 20×20 Initiative Joint Meeting for Latin America on Restoring Degraded Lands. In Belize, we’ve internationalized our national work for conservation and commitment to environmental protection. We remain nationally and regionally committed to be a voice that will lead those actions and initiatives that are critical for our very survival as small climate vulnerable states,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Briceño noted that locally, several organizations have introduced mangrove, reef and several other environmental regeneration initiatives.
