By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 5, 2023, the Embassy of Belize in Taiwan and Central America Trade Office (CATO) hosted the inaugural ceremony of the Belize Lantern at the 2023 National Taiwan Lantern Festival.

This year, the Belize Embassy and Ambassador Dr. Candice Pitts featured the Jaguar Preserve and Wondrous Wild Life of Belize.

Prime Minister John Briceño thanked Taiwan for the celebration of Belize’s natural heritage.

“We’re honoured that Belize was an inspiration for the Republic of China (Taiwan) celebration of the annual Lantern Festival. The Festival is also Taiwan’s celebration of 34 years of bilateral relations that country shares with our Central American nations.

We thank Taiwan for the celebration of our rich natural heritage,” the Prime Minister said.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded saying that the country welcomes Belizeans to visit Taiwan and experience the festival.

“Belize’s natural heritage is indeed something to be proud of. We welcome Belizeans to visit Taiwan and witness the lantern festival firsthand. We’re also thrilled to celebrate 34 years with our ally and friend in Belize,” the Ministry noted.
