5 athletes represent Belize at Central American Karate Championships in San José, Costa Rica

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Five athletes are representing Belize at Central American Karate Championships in San José, Costa Rica.

According to the Belize Karate Federation, the five athletes are Julie Cruz (U14, -47kgs, Female Kumite), Keenan Thimbrel (U14, -40 kgs, Male Kumite), Jayden Tillett (U14, -55 kgs, Male Kumite), Malachi Garcia (Cadet, -67 kgs, Male Kumite), and Shyheim Tablada (U21, -75 kgs, Male Kumite).

Four of them, namely Cruz, Thimbrel, Tillett, and Garcia, are competing on Friday. Tablada competes on Saturday,  February 11.

All Central American countries are participating.

At the same time, three officials of the Belize Karate Federation are pursuing their officiating license in Costa Rica at the same regional championships. They are Kimberly Bowman, Rito Fernandez, and Christine Norlay-Nichols.

The Belizean contingent is led by Belize Karate Federation President Sensei Herman Pastor.

The Central American Karate Confederation (CCONDEKA) said the tournament is a preparation event for the 2023 El Salvador Central American and Caribbean Games that serve as qualifiers for the Pan American Games, and for the Central American and Caribbean Championships to be held in Mexico from February 26 to March 5.
