Belmopan Red Taigaz grab 1st victory, beat Griga Dream Ballers 91-79

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Playing at home at the UB Gymnasium the Belmopan Read Taigaz recorded their first victory in the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) on Friday night defeating the Griga Dream Ballers 91-79 in a rather competitive game.

The Taigaz led most of the way, but the Griga side rallied back continuously. The Dream Ballers actually took the lead 67-66 at the end of the third quarter and then tied the game three times at the beginning of the fourth before relinquishing the lead for good with six minutes to go.

Brandon Flowers propelled the Taigaz to their first win with 23 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, a steal, and two blocks. Jeremiah Toney added 20 points to go along with five rebounds, and a steal. Jevaughn McKenzie scored 14 points, pulled four boards, and made four assists, while Benjamin Page added 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, made four assists and a steal.

D’von Campbell hit a game high 31 points pulled for the Griga Dream Ballers. He also contributed four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Kevon Laurie added 14 points, made five rebounds, four steals, four assists and a steal. Delvon Henderson and Edgar Mitchell scored ten points apiece. Henderson also had 12 rebounds and two assists along with a block. Mitchell was good for three rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

In the other game on Friday night, the Belize City Defenders dropped the Western Ballaz 84-69 and are now 3-0. The Ballaz dropped to 2-1.

The BEBL championship continues Saturday night with the Running Rebels hosting the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex at 9:00 pm while the Punta Gorda Panthers match up against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks at 9:30 pm at the PG Sporting Complex.
