By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, the Belize Defence Force (BDF) reached out to the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic and the Belize Zoo when an adult female tapir started visiting them at Da Silva Camp in the Mountain Pine Ridge.
The tapir was severely underweight and eagerly accepted food from the concerned soldiers.
The Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic and General Curator, Humberto Wohlers, safely relocated the tapir to the Belize Zoo.
The Belize Zoo says that “Valentina” has a long road to recovery, but is now in good hands, and will receive the vital care she needs.
“A tapir-tastic thank you goes out to Corporal Ba and his BDF colleagues, as well as BWRC and Belize Zoo staff who made Valentina’s journey calm and comfortable,” a statement from the zoo said.
