No murders in Belize City since death of William Dawson; Commissioner pays respect

By Aaron Humes: January saw just four murders reported countrywide, two of those in Belize City, which both occurred on New Year’s Day.

Up to this morning’s murder of Andre Vernon there had been no more, and that is no coincidence according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.

But while the Commissioner says his men deserve their kudos, the lion’s share goes to the young men who have been working among themselves to pay the highest possible honour to the late William Dawson, Director of the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) – keeping the peace in the City.

“As we have said to the young men – and even at the funeral of Mister Dawson in my presentation – I called upon them to see Mister Dawson’s passing as a way that they can reflect on him, and they must not allow his legacy to go to waste. Again, they said it in the meeting today that they are holding true to what they have been taught by Mister Dawson, in ensuring that the peace in the City continues. Yes, I can say that the Police have been doing a lot – but the lot that the Police are doing, along with the fact that these young men are holding it down, is contributing to the peace that we are seeing in the City at this time, and we want to do what we can to ensure that it continues,” the Commissioner told reporters.

Referring to the deaths of tourist J’Bria Bowens on Ambergris Caye and the now triple shooting murder in Belmopan, following a rash of incidents over the post-Christmas holidays, the Commissioner said he was not pleased with the way the year of 2022 ended and Police have made adjustments to ensure that 2023 will be better.
