Caribbean Rum Boyz edge Progresso 1-0, win 3rd in-a-row Orange Walk Football Association 1st Division Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Caribbean Rum Boyz beat Progresso 1-0 to win the Kevin Bernard Orange Walk Football Association 1st Division Opening Football Championship.

An own goal in the seventh minute by Progresso’s Nigel Carlos gave the Caribbean Rum Boyz their third title at the Louisiana Government Field in Orange Walk on Sunday.

Prior to winning this championship, the Rum Boyz blanked Progresso 2-0 on June 29 last year to take the 2021-2022 OWFA Closing Championship on June 29. Progresso qualified by virtue of a 2-1 win over the San Jose Pumas.

Earlier, on January 23, the Caribbean Rum Boyz defeated Guinea Grass FC 3-2 to capture the 2021-2022 Opening Championship. Guinea Grass FC had left Progresso on the wayside in the semifinals.

After the Final, Minister Bernard along with Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Shepard and president Sergio Chuc of the Football Federation of Belize presenting team trophies and medals to Caribbean Rum Boyz and Progresso as champions and subchampions.

The following are the individual awards presented by the OWFA:

MVP – Alwin Zelaya – Caribbean Rum Boys

Most Goals – Michael Rivas – San Jose Pumas

Best Midfielder – Nestor Heredia – Progresso FC

Best Defense (Posthumous) – Jose ‘Cacho’ Guy (R.I.P.) – Sinbad of San Antonio (Guy died recently; his award was received by his sister Yamily Guy)

Best Goalkeeper Emir Garcia – San Jose Pumas

Best Coach – Israel Canul – Caribbean Rum Boys

Team with Most Fans – San Jose Pumas

According to the FFB Games Commissioner, special awards were also presented to Minister Bernard as the tournament sponsor, FFB president Sergio Chuc, and Corporal Vidal Cajun (posthumously).
