Football and basketball tournaments in William Dawson’s name – but who will be next to lead Intervention Unit?

By Aaron Humes: The sudden and unexpected death of William Dawson leaves a gaping void that those who knew, appreciated, and loved him realize may never be truly filled.

The late director of the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), who gave his life in the service of Belizean youth, must have had “his ears ringing” per Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, so many were the times his name was invoked during Monday’s meeting between community, Police and Government leaders on furthering the Multisectoral Approach to Crime and the work of the LIU.

And while Dawson is “an irreplaceable force to reckon with” who left “an incredible legacy and big shoes to fill, Musa said there are many willing to take up the mantle. As many as 15 individuals have applied to succeed him as director of the LIU and Musa said they will take their time making a choice.

The ultimate choice, he made note, must be able to curry the same level of trust and confidence Dawson enjoyed from LIU participants: “I think that is a critical part of this; Mister Dawson enjoyed that trust and confidence among all areas. He could walk in any single area across this City at any time of day, any time of night, and no one would ever think of harming him because they knew his genuine nature, they knew where his heart was…”

Musa added that youth leaders who attended the meeting have submitted a potential candidate and so there will be consensus on who succeeds Dawson, but that until that person is chosen, the established LIU structure remains in place to continue the work he started.

Prime Minister John Briceño announced at the February 3 meeting of the House of Representatives that an appropriate posthumous national honour would be given to Dawson later this year. According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, the next iteration of the Sprite Live Life Youth Basketball Tournament will be for the William Dawson Peace Cup, and a football tournament is being organized with Bernard “Dubu” Thomas, caretaker of the field next to the Racoon Street Police headquarters, also to be named for Dawson.
