Asian couple pick up third drug trafficking charge; Bail still not revoked

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An Asian couple that already had two pending court cases for drug trafficking, picked up a third drug-related charge this week, but still have not had their bail from the initial offense revoked.

Zhi Jun Huang and Jinlian Zhang appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another with respect to two grams of crack cocaine found at their home during a police search.

Huang pleaded not guilty to drug possession as opposed to drug trafficking and said that it was actually one gram of crack cocaine instead of two.

Huang was also charged with possession of utensils for smoking a controlled drug, for a crack pipe that was found along with the drugs. He also pleaded guilty to that offense. With his guilty plea his wife was cleared of all charges.

In mitigation, the Chief Magistrate asked Huang why he should not be sent to prison, and in response he pleaded for leniency, noting that he has a small child that he needs to care for.

For his guilty plea, Huang was fined $2,000 plus $5 cost of court for the possession of a controlled drugs charge and $500 plus $5.00 cost of court for the crack pipe. He has until May 31 to pay both fines or spend 1 year and six months in prison respectively for default. However, Huang forfeited the $5,000 he had put up as part of his $15,000 bail for violating his bail conditions. He was allowed to leave after he paid the money.

On July 21, 2022, police busted Huang, Zhang, and several employees at their grocery store for possession of marijuana, crack cocaine, and Crystal Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth). He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 for that incident.

On October 21, 2022, Huang was charged for showing up to the Queen Street Police Station with 6.4 grams of crystal meth in his possession. He was granted bail for the second offense, without the bail of the first offense being revoked despite being criminally charged while out on bail.
