Man charged for smoking marijuana in public

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 57-year-old Belize City man learned this week that though it has been decriminalized to possess 10 grams of marijuana, it is still illegal to smoke it in public.

Paul Myers appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, answering to a single charge of smoking marijuana in public.

Myers pleaded not guilty to the charge and is challenging the police to prove their charge against him.

Since there was no objection to bail, the Senior Magistrate granted him self-bail in the sum of $500 which he was able to meet.

Myers is due back in court on March 14.

Police say that they found him smoking marijuana in public while on Holy Emmanuel Street on Sunday, February 12.
