International News: El Salvador’s crackdown on gangs continue as residents applaud safer streets

Posted: Thursday, February 16, 2023. 2:52 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The state of emergency in El Salvador will continue to combat gangs, Reuters report.

The state of emergency was first implemented in March, 2022 and despite criticisms by human rights groups, the Salvadoran government seems to have their public’s support for the measure.

President Nayib Bukele remains convinced that the crackdown is contributing to safer streets and a safer country.

“As long as we have these murderers and these terrorists fleeing and escaping within the country, this measure must continue,” Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro stated.

The country now has almost 2% of its adult population imprisoned making it the highest incarceration rate in the world.

A recent survey by pollsters CID Gallup found that 92% of the population supports the measure.

Last year, homicides fell 57% to 495, from 1,147 in 2021, according to government figures.
