By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fifty persons today participated in the 8th Lamb and Mutton Culinary Craft Workshop held by Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project Phase II), in Yo Creek, Orange Walk District.

The workshop is part of the effort launched by MAFSE and the Sheep and Goat Project to develop the Belize sheep and goat industry’s domestic market.

“The workshop aims to train seed instructors and sheep farmers in culinary skills of lamb and mutton preparation and cooking to increase the consumption of lamb and mutton products in Belize,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise said.

The training facilitated by MAFSE Extension Officer Frank Padron included carcass preparation, meat cutting, ingredient preparation, cooking process of stew lamb, lamb chop suey and barbecue lamb.

The 50 participants included MAFSE livestock extension officers, butchers, restaurateurs and sheep and goat farmers. To reach more farmers with the cooking workshops which Padron has been conducting in several parts of the country, the participating extension officers will now assist in training sheep and goat farmers in their districts.

According to Andrew Mejia, MAFSE’s Coordinator of the Sheep and Goat Project, with the 8th 8th Lamb and Mutton Culinary Craft Workshop, they have now trained 350 people in all six districts. The objective is to reach all the districts in this second round.

“The Government of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are committed to supporting Belizean farmers and strengthening the sheep and goat industry,” the Government of Belize Press Office said.

“Through the Sheep and Goat Project, the theoretical and practical training and educational outreach will further help to advance Belizeans’ welfare.”
