Ministry of Transport gives bus operators final deadlines to improve and upgrade fleets

Posted: Thursday, February 16, 2023. 7:06 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Transport has set a final December 2024 deadline to fully modernize the public ground transportation fleet – omnibuses, busitos, and taxis – after the Cabinet approved recommended standards at a meeting in January.

Operators are expected to update 50 percent of their fleet by December 2023 and fully upgrade their entire fleet by the end of 2024. In a statement today, the Ministry said buses should be modernized to a production date of 12 years ago, i.e. made in 2010 or later. Road Service Permits will be extended from two to ten years based on the bus age.

There will be three road service permit types: Class A (Premier), for buses no older than 10 years; Class B (Economy) for buses no older than 20 years, and Class C (Rural), for buses no older than 25 years.

With the modernization comes full standard operating procedures including a fleet inspection program and bus upgrades. Reform of the transport sector will lead, the Ministry says, to “an enhanced experience with safety and reliability as the main objectives” for consumers and greater inclusion and security for operators. Further consultation will be held to ensure the entire sector benefits.

The modernization will include full standard operating procedures consisting of a fleet inspection program and upgrades.
