By Breaking Belize News Staff: Suspended police officer Virgil Perez was found guilty this week in the High Court of Belize of stealing a $55,000 Toyota Hilux.
Perez was convicted by a nine-member jury on Thursday. Following the verdict Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft reserved sentencing for March 31.
Perez remains in custody at the Belize Central Prison awaiting his sentencing hearing.
At the trial, which began on February 8, police witnesses testified that on the night of February 26, 2012, officers attached to the Belmopan formation stopped the pickup being driven at the time by Perez, who had another police officer in the vehicle with him.
Initial searches of their person did not yield the discovery of any illegal items; however, when officers searched the vehicle, they noted that the rear window was broken and that there was glass on the floor.
The officers then took Perez and the passenger to the Belmopan police station and impounded the vehicle. It was later learned that the vehicle was stolen from the Belize Diesel Equipment Ltd. compound located at Mile 1 on the Philip Goldson Highway. Perez was charged soon after.
