Dr Andre Sosa out at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority; Health Minister says hospital needs to “refocus”

By Aaron Humes: Amidst tension with the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers’ Union (KHMHAWU) over security and supplies concerns, Minister of Health Kevin Bernard has made a sudden change in leadership of the Authority, ousting chairman Dr Andre Sosa.

The Minister made the announcement by email to members of the KHMH Authority Board on Friday afternoon, with businessman Arun Hotchandani appointed interim chairman up to February 28 when a new chair will be appointed.

In a statement to LOVE FM, the Minister said that “[I] believe that the KHMH needs to move forward in a viable manner, financially and I think that while Dr Sosa has served in that capacity and meant well for the KHMH and I wish him well, I just think it is time for us to refocus the KHMH in addressing many of the issues facing KHMH at the same time and to move KHMH in a more financially viable footing and I think we need to identify a new chairman who will be able to do that.”

But other reports suggest other reasons, including suggestions that Dr Sosa favored the workers’ union and that he and other leaders at the Hospital and the Ministry were not getting along. The Minister specifically denied that his decision was related to the Union’s current activities or the industrial action it carried out this week.

Neither Dr Sosa, who was appointed in 2020, nor Hotchandani had further comment while the Minister said he would have additional comment next week.
