By Aaron Humes: The General Revenue and Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2023/2024, also known as the Budget, will be presented in the House of Representatives for its first reading on March 10, according to an announcement made by the Prime Minister. The Speaker, Valerie Woods, has approved the meeting of the House on that day. The Cabinet has instructed the Speaker to set the date, exercising her authority to do so.
The Government has indicated that its budget priorities will focus on critical sectors such as health, infrastructure, education, and the judiciary. Interested parties will be monitoring the Budget to see which sectors will receive increases or reductions.
Trade unions will be keenly observing the Budget to determine if the Government will restore increments that were frozen in 2020. However, no progress has been reported on this matter. Teachers’ allowances will also be examined as part of the collective bargaining agreement.
After the first reading of the bill, it will be debated later in the month before proceeding to the Senate for approval. Finally, it will be presented to the Governor-General for assent.
