By Aaron Humes: The Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) saw several upsets and one rather bizarre ending in this weekend’s slate of games.
We have already reported on the 28-10 game between the Belize City Hurricanes and Western Ballaz at the Civic Center on Friday night, where the Ballaz had only five players suited up at the start of the game including one clearly injured player who soon had to exit. The others quickly amassed fouls and the game was called off before the end of the first quarter but goes down as a Hurricanes win despite suspicions their opponents were protesting recent issues within the League. As of tonight, there is no official box score for the game on the League’s website.
Also on Friday, Orange Walk Running Rebels won 81-68 over visiting Belmopan Red Taigaz in the Sugar City. Belmopan’s Benjamin Page and Jeremiah Toney led all scorers with 22 points each but Orange Walk’s Tyrone Hall scored 20 to pace the northern side.
On Saturday, Punta Gorda Panthers upset Belize City Defenders at home 87-82 behind a 35-point performance from Davis Tavian. Darnell Oden added 14 points and 11 rebounds. For the Old Capital side, Nigel Jones had 24 points and 7 rebounds, Devin Daly scored 23 and Treandus Branch 16.
The other southern side, Griga Dream Ballers, won 81-74 over defending champions San Pedro Tigersharks who were led by 27 points from Jamaal Clifton and 19 from Francis Arena. The southerners rode a balanced attack with five players in double figures, led by 18 points from Jaheim Ciego.
