By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In the National Secondary Schools Sports Association’s Football Championship, Escuela Secundaria Técnica México (ESTM) from San Roman, Corozal District, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Mount Carmel High School (MCHS) in the final at Ambergris Stadium. The championship was hosted by San Pedro High School.
ESTM’s goalkeeper, Brandon Castañeda, played exceptionally well and was voted as the NSSSA’s Most Valuable Player. Jason Sanchez, who scored a brace in the final, was the tournament’s top scorer with four goals. Sanchez shook the net in the 35’ off a penalty kick and then again in the 60’+5’. Kayser Tut converted for MCHS in the 38’.
Sanchez has started off superbly on Friday netting a pair as he led ESTM to a 3-1 win over Central Champs Excelsior High from Belize City. Kaylen McFoy scored the opening goal for Excelsior in the second minute, but Sanchez quickly erased their lead with the brace. Milton Flores added the third goal for ESTM.
In the other semifinal, MCHS blanked Delille Academy 2-0, with Kayser Tut (31’) and Gidier Ayala (52’ – pk) scoring the goals. Delille Academy won third place by beating Excelsior 2-0 on Saturday with goals from Aaron Estero in the 13’ and 34’.

ESTM’s win over MCHS secured them the first-place spot in the NSSSA ranking for the North, followed by MCHS in second place for the West, Delille Academy in third place for the South, and Excelsior in fourth place for the Central Region.
