By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Nations (UN) is concerned about the increasing number of children making the dangerous trek across the Darien Jungle, Reuters report.
The Darien gap links Panama and Colombia and many cross annually in an effort to reach the U.S.
Diana Romero, an emergency protection specialist at the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) said that by the end of 2023, over 300,000 migrants would have crossed of which, 60,000 could be minors.
“At least 20% (of people using the route) will be children and adolescents,” Romero said.
The UNICEF official noted that over recent years, the Darien Gap has gone from being a route for adult migrants to hosting whole families fleeing from poverty, violence and lack of work.
