By Benjamin Flowers: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union (KHMHAWU) announced today that it has ceased all plans for further industrial action after a successful meeting with the KHMH Authority (KHMHA), Labour Department and the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW).

The KHMHAWU issued a statement saying that it acknowledges and accepts the public apology of KHMHA Chief Executive Officer Chandra Cansino and accepts the commitments made by the KHMHA and MOHW.

“The KHMHAWU has gotten a commitment from MOHW and KHMHA to provide a continuous supply of materials, adequate laboratory testing and pharmaceuticals of good quality. MOHW has also set a timeline of six (6) months as to the arrival and installation of a new CT-scan
at the KHMHA,” the union said.

The union added that the dialogue with the KHMHA is ongoing in an effort to ensure the integrity of the supply chain and eliminate miscommunication between the two parties.

However, the KHMHWU raised issues with comments made by Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard, regarding the delivery of care given to the public by KHMH staff.

“Lastly, the KHMHAWU would like to express that as healthcare professionals we are appalled by the comments of the Minister of Health in his latest interview which referenced that the KHMHA staff are “not genuine” in their duty as healthcare professionals,” the union said. “We would like to reiterate that even with shortages, substandard supplies and the unsatisfactory staff morale services continued uninterrupted.”

The KHMHWU and hospital authority had been engaged in a war of words last week, both sides making their contentions known via the media. The union went as far as to accuse the KHMHA of union busting with the way it was handling a peaceful protest held by the hospital staff.
