By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Orange Walk Technical High School (OWTHS) girls claimed the National Secondary Schools Sports Association’s Football Championship in a 2-0 Final over Saint Ignatius High School of Santa Elena, Cayo at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro. The two-day tournament was hosted by San Pedro High School.
Led by Most Valuable Player Elva Nunes, OWTHS had rolled over Belize City’s Wesley College 5-0 the day before while St Ignatius had downed Independence High 1-0.
In the final, Nunes, the daughter of Jorge Nunes, ex-Juventus player and present San Pedro Pirates’ head coach, converted the two goals against St Ignatius in the 33’ and 40’+6’.
Independence High School (HIS) won third place dropping Wesley College 1-0 on a 21st minute goal by Shanelle Martinez.
In the semifinals on Friday, Nunes scored two of OWTHS five goals over Wesley in the 10’ and 40’+2’. The others were scored by Debbie Lopez in the sixth minute, and Josefin Reyes in the 32’ and 35’.
In the other match, St Ignatius High edge 1-0 Independence High on a 23rd minute goal by Tyra Thomas.
Final NSSSA Ranking:
1st place North – OWTHS
2nd place West – SIHS
3rd place South – IHS
4th place Central – Wesley
