International News: Journalists say surveillance a threat to media in El Salvador

Posted: Tuesday, February 21, 2023. 10:43 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele is known for communicating via Twitter.

According to the Voice of America, Bukele is also known for calling out media that report critically on him and his government.

In addition, reputable websites such as El Faro and Revista Factum have been falsely accused of money laundering and false reporting.

The Salvadoran Government has also reportedly implemented a communication “juggernaut” staffed by “paid internet trolls” who target media and opposition voices.

The Pegasus software is marketed to government agencies and can be used to extract cellphone data or activate cameras and microphones.

But, the Salvadoran Government have denied using the software to hack phones.

However, analysts have warned that the hostile relationship between press and president could pose a threat to independent media, especially during elections.
