Police continue investigation into circumstances of late evening crash in Cayo

Posted: Tuesday, February 21, 2023. 3:44 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 42-year-old Aurelio Ayala and 21-year-old Juana Samosa, who were run into from behind while travelling on a Lifan motorcycle by an ambulance.

According to Police Department press officer Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, the ambulance’s driver, Josh Barillas, claimed to investigators he didn’t see the motorcycle in front of him before the crash as they were both travelling toward Belmopan. The crash happened on the Beaver Dam Bridge which separates St. Matthew’s village from Cotton Tree on the George Price Highway.

The ambulance was assigned in the south and appears to have been returning from Belize City. As part of the investigation, the Department will establish whether the motorcycle had lights and whether they were on, as well as whether the driver and passenger were wearing helmets.

The Bridge itself has no lights but there are streetlights on either side of the highway on both approaches to it.

Barillas has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
