Security guard caught apparently drunk with work-issued firearm remanded to prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A security guard has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after police caught him with this work-issued .9mm pistol while apparently intoxicated.

Belize City resident 53-year-old Derrick Castillo appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson, answering to a single charge of possession of a firearm whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol above the prescribed limit.

In court, he pleaded guilty to the charge; however, the court rejected the plea on the grounds that the prosecution could not immediately disclose the exact blood alcohol content to show that it was over the limit.

The prosecution explained that doing so would take some time as Castillo’s lab results were still pending. The prosecution also noted that bail cannot be considered at the Magistrate level as the offense is covered under the Firearms Act.

With that, Castillo was remanded to prison until May 22

Police say that he was found drunk on Thursday, February 16, at Mile 3 1/2 on the Philip Goldson Highway with the weapon which contained 10 live .9mm rounds. Officers had responded to a report of a drunken man boarding a bus with two firearms on him, but only found one when they surrounded the bus and detained Castillo.
