By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After the game between the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes and Western Ballaz that didn’t reach its natural conclusion last weekend in Belize City, the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) said in a press release that team owners signed an agreement giving ‘unwavering their unwavering support for the tournament’s continuation.”

The BEBL said it convened a special team owners’ meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 to devise a preventative interruption plan for the season.

“The team owners agreed with and signed a participation accord signaling their unwavering support for the tournament’s continuation,” the BEBL said it a statement.

“In addition to the signed document, all team owners verbally expressed their assurance to the fans, partners, and the league to provide high-quality sporting entertainment for the remainder of the season.”

The BEBL statement also said that “during the meeting, the owners of the Cayo Western Ballers also apologized for the events that unfolded in their match with the Belize Hurricanes last Friday at the Belize City Civic Centre”.

However, the Cayo Western Ballaz denied the statement.

“Cayo Western Ballaz has nothing to apologize for because we did nothing wrong last week Friday,” said the Cayo Western Ballaz in a comment under the BEBL social media post that published the BEBL statement and in a post of their own.

“We showed up with five players as stipulated in the FIBA rules.”

After the game the Western Ballaz said that injuries had caused their team to default the game. The BEBL said in a statement after the match that they believed the Western Ballaz “not fielding an entire team, appears to be a form of protest, which goes against the spirit of what the League is working tirelessly to develop”.

Earlier, five BEBL owners had said that if the Hurricanes played Kirk Smith Jr, whom they accused of signing with two teams (the Hurricanes and the Belize City Defenders), they would not play Hurricanes home games.

The BEBL said the Week 5 features hotly contested matchups for regional crowns across the country.

The Belize Hurricanes host archrivals Belize City Defenders at the Belize City Civic Center on Friday at 9:00 pm. Both are undefeated.

The Belmopan Read Taigaz will be home against the Western Ballaz at the UB Gym on Friday at 8:00 pm.

On Friday as well, the Orange Walk Running Rebels take on the defending champions San Pedro Tigersharks at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex at 9:00 pm.

The only Saturday game will feature the Southern teams. Griga Dream Ballers play at home against the Punta Gorda Panthers at the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga at 9:00 pm.
