By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, during her remarks in Germany, U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris said that Russia has committed crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
“In the case of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, we have examined the evidence, we know the legal standards, and there is no doubt: These are crimes against humanity,” Harris stated.
“To all those who have perpetrated these crimes, and to their superiors who are complicit in those crimes, you will be held to account,” Harris added.
In addition, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the U.S. stance in a statement released by the U.S. State Department.
“We reserve crimes against humanity determinations for the most egregious crimes,
These acts are not random or spontaneous; they are part of the Kremlin’s widespread and systematic attack against Ukraine’s civilian population,” Blinken stated.
The declaration remains symbolic and does not give the US the ability to prosecute the Russians involved with perpetrating crimes against humanity.
But, it could provide the International Criminal Court with evidence to effectively try to prosecute those crimes.
