National Kriol Council to host information session on People’s Constitutional Commission

Posted: Wednesday, February 22, 2023. 11:41 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The National Kriol Council (NKC) will be hosting an information session this week regarding the latest updates pertaining to the People’s Constitutional Commission, which is currently holding consultations with the end goal of making recommendations to amend Belize’s Constitution.

The information session is set for Saturday, February 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Swift Hall Auditorium in the St. Martin’s Area of Belize City. Speaking at the session will be lead representative for the NKC on the Commission, Attorney Anthony Sylvester, and his alternate Adelia Young. Former Ombudsman Cynthia Pitts will also be a guest presenter at the event.

President of the NKC, Marillyn Gavin, told Breaking Belize News that the council is targeting its members, the Kriol population, black organizations, and anyone who has an interest in contributing or understanding what the reform process is all about.

Gavin said that the session is for attendees “To be informed and empowered and in turn to contribute towards the process.”

Gavin added that conversations being had at the council level for recommended reforms include “What section of the constitution needs to be amended to ensure we secure, address the illegal activities being done to our people. How can we strengthen and empower our people so they can help themselves and so they know their rights? What funding opportunity exists to help our people, as well as economic empowerment.”

The NKC was one of the last entities to get a seat on the Commission last year, following the Prime Minister’s announcement that steps were being taken for constitutional reform.

The Commission officially launched in November 2022 and will be holding consultations with all sectors of society. In January 2023, the commission held a meeting in Belmopan to discuss its strategic plan for the next 15 months. See full article here.
