Pope Francis on Ash Wednesday: Lent is a season of grace for rebuilding our relationship with God

Posted: Wednesday, February 22, 2023. 4:17 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Pope Francis celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass today, emphasizing that Lent is a season of grace that allows us to rebuild our relationship with God and others. During his homily, the Pope reminded the congregation that the ashes are a reminder of who we are and where we come from. They bring us back to the essential truth of our lives, that the Lord alone is God and we are the work of his hands.

Christians around the world gathered for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. This symbolic starting point of Lent is a time for reflection and repentance. The marking of the ashes in the form of a cross on the forehead represents mortality and penance for our sins.

During Lent, Christians fast, make resolutions to give up something, and engage in self-improvement. They are encouraged to engage in self-reflection, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, all in an effort to rebuild their relationship with God.

The ash is applied to the forehead by a priest, with a blessing that serves as a reminder that we are dust, and to dust, we shall return. Lent is a time to remember our mortality and to focus on the essential truth that the Lord is the source of our life.
