By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize recently tabled and passed three loan motions to advance the PlanBelize development agenda, and on February 21, 2023, Prime Minister John Briceño met with the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to sign the agreements.
The three development programs include a loan motion for Trade and Investment Facilitation Program for Belize for US$8 million, a Program for Digital Innovation to Boost Economic Development in Belize for US$10 million, and a Program for Sustainable and Inclusive Belize at US$15 million loan to assist micro small and medium enterprises.
As a valued development partner, the IDB has made significant contributions to Belize across economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, services, infrastructure, education, and health, among others, through its loans, grants, and technical assistance programs, as noted by PM Briceño.
These new agreements are expected to support the country’s efforts towards sustainable and inclusive development, digital innovation, and trade and investment facilitation.
