Russell Bernardez’s death caused by blunt force trauma, not shooting

By Aaron Humes: A post-mortem examination of 35-year-old Russell Bernardez’s body has changed the trajectory of police investigations into his murder.

Examiner Dr Roque Blanco concluded that Bernardez suffered blunt force trauma to the head causing acute Cranioencephalic traumatism, which according to the National Head Injury Foundation, is defined as “brain damage, non-degenerative in nature, caused by an external force, which can cause a decrease or alteration of consciousness, resulting in Impairment of functioning of cognitive and physical abilities.”

Police had initially reported that the wounds found on Bernardez’s head had been caused by a gunshot. He was found after six a.m. Tuesday morning at Belize City’s Lord’s Ridge Cemetery.

Investigations into the incident continue.
