International News: Transfers commence to El Salvador’s ‘mega prison’ amid gang crackdown

Posted: Friday, February 24, 2023. 3:58 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Salvadoran government transferred thousands of suspected gang members to its newly opened ‘mega-prison’, Reuters report.

Since March 2022, President Nayib Bukele implemented a state of emergency that has been renewed monthly in an effort to crack down on violent gangs.

“This will be their new home, where they won’t be able to do any more harm to the population,” President Nayib Bukele said.

The 40,000-person capacity prison is considered to be the largest in the Americas.

Since the beginning of President’s Bukele crackdown on gangs, over 64,000 suspects have been detained.

Human rights organizations continue to criticize Bukele saying that innocent people have been caught up in the policy, however, polls show that the majority of Salvadorans support the measure.
