By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the United Nations human rights office (OHCHR) indicates that since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, about 8,000 non-combatants have been murdered, with 13,300 injured.
That number is likely to be higher, the office noted.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk noted that human rights and humanitarian law are violated daily.
“It becomes harder and harder to find a way forward through mounting suffering and destruction, towards peace,” Türk stated.
Türk says that civilians have been murdered in their homes while simply trying to meet their essential needs, such as collecting water and buying food.
Testimonies of victims mark the true extent of the suffering in Ukraine, Türk said.
In addition, almost 18 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, with 14 million people displaced from their homes.
