Market trips costing more; prices of fresh vegetables up by 26%

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Consumers have noticed that regular trips to the market is costing more with higher prices for vegetables.

The subcategory of ‘Food’ alone had an inflation rate of 17.9 %, with considerably higher prices being seen across almost all basic food items, the Statistical Institute of Belize noted.

Prices for fresh vegetables were up by 26.1 %, with items such as cabbages, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet peppers, and onions rising most notably.

The prices of cabbage and tomatoes saw a 70% and 69% increase per pound respectively.

Cabbage went from $1.37 to $2.33 per pound and tomatoes from $2.08 to $3.53 per pound.

In addition, meat products were up by 11 percent, due to sharp increases in the prices of beef, poultry, and pork.

Dairy products and eggs also noted an increase of 21 percent, as a result of significantly higher prices for natural milks, cheeses, and eggs.

This indicates that the country saw an overall national inflation rate of 6.6 percent on goods and services that are typically bought by Belizean households.
