By Aaron Humes: The first month of 2023 was a good one for imports into Belize, as a total of $212.3 million in value was imported, up nearly 22 million from last January or 11.4 percent according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

Many are things we can’t do without, at least if the economy is to keep moving. Examples include high-value vehicles, production machine lines and solar panels (an increase of $7.9 million), steel coils and rods (up $5.8 million); x-ray film, wooden furniture, and plastic bottles (up $5.7 million), and particularly fertilizer, herbicide and detergent (up $4.8 million).

Others include things we also make here, such as treated pine lumber of which $2.6 million more was imported, as well as orange concentrate alongside margarine and condensed milk. The Food and Live Animals category rose $3.1 million for the month in all.

However, there are some things we can do less of, such as cigarettes, alcoholic and some aerated beverages, though nearly $2 million dollars more of these was imported in January of 2023 compared to last year.

The sole category to see a decrease was imports into the commercial free zones, which resell imported items such as clothing, tennis shoes, and handbags, usually of high-end quality. Imports fell from $42.5 million to $31.2 million in this category.
