Test results prove Police Constable Arturo Leal was drunk driving when he caused traffic accident last year

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Constable Arturo Leal received additional charges in relation to a traffic accident he caused in December 2022, when his lab tests confirmed this week that he was drunk driving at the time.

Leal appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was charged with driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. Leal had already been facing charges of negligent harm, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, using an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle while not being covered by third-party risk insurance.

He pleaded not guilty and his old bail remained and he was free to go until his next court date on April 20.

The accident occurred on December 13, 2022, around 6:30 p.m. between miles 14 and 15 on the Philip Goldson Highway.

On January 20, 2023, Leal pleaded guilty to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and was fined $50 and cost of court. He has until February 28 to pay, or he will spend two months in prison for default.

Leal also pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst not being covered by third-party risk insurance. He was fined $250 and cost of court and was given until March 31 to pay, in default two months’ imprisonment.
