By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 26, 2023, Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca met with members of the Garifuna community to discuss education and culture.
The session was held at the Tuani Garifuna Cultural Center.
Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano and Senator Erica Jang also participated.
“We had an engaging discussion about the state of Education in the Garifuna Community and the absolute need to work together to promote and preserve the Garifuna language and Culture. I also used the opportunity to brief them on a number of ongoing national issues.
I truly value the wisdom and advice of this group of elders who have and continue to contribute to the growth and development of Belize,” Fonseca said.
The group included Ombudsman Major Gilbert Swazo, Roy Cayetano, former Mayor Cassian Nunez, Canon Jerris Valentine, Anthony Sabal, and Wellington Elijio.
Minister Fonseca also visited Baba Rodriguez, a traditional Garifuna drum maker.
“I also used the opportunity to visit with Baba Rodriguez, one of the last remaining traditional Garifuna Drum makers. Thankfully he has taught his daughter the art of Drum Making and she intends to carry on her father’s legacy,” Fonseca added.
