Belize Culture and Women’s Month celebrated in Taiwan

Posted: Wednesday, March 1, 2023. 9:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Belize Ambassador to Taiwan, Dr. Candice A. Pitts hosted the inaugural ceremony of the Belize Culture and Women’s Month at the National Central Library (NCL) in Taiwan.

The launch was held in collaboration with NCL and the Central American Trade Office (CATO).

The exhibition includes images and mini biographical statements of women from all walks of life who make contributions to the development of Belize.

On display are also a range of artwork by and about women.

Ambassador Pitts highlighted the ways in which Culture and Art are deployed as instruments to celebrate Women and Womanhood.

Ambassador Pitts also connected the aim of the Belize Exhibition to the theme of the 2023 International Women’s Day, which is to #EmbraceEquity, particularly since one of the commitments of this theme is to highlight women creatives and their artistic talents.

An important aspect of the inaugural ceremony was the presentation of Mayan table runners to women who serve in or are connected to the foreign services in Taiwan, such as Andrea Bowman, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Jenny Bloomfield, Representative of Australian Trade Office; Sandra Oudkirk, Director of American Institute of Taiwan; Dr. Tseng Director General of National Central Library, and Jeannie Tien, immediate past President of Welcome to Taipei International Club.

The Mayan table runners were commissioned from Martina Pop, a Q’eqchi Mayan woman from Southern Belize.

Ambassador Pitts encouraged the recipients of the table runners to make use of them in such a manner that would help highlight the creative talents of these Mayan women.

Ambassador Pitts concluded her remarks by imploring everyone in the audience to join us in #EmbracingEquity, by using the office and roles they assume to help challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek inclusion.

The Belize Exhibition is at the National Central Library from March 1 to 31, 2023.
