By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has been conducting a ‘major upgrade’ of the San Ignacio-Santa Elena Low-Lying Bridge.
“Our team from the MIDH is currently conducting critical repairs to the low-lying bridge in the Cayo District,” the MIDH said.
“The bridge has survived numerous floods and heavy impact from debris, and it’s time for a major upgrade to ensure that it is safe for motorists and pedestrians who use it daily.”
The Low-Lying Bridge is one of three bridges in San Ignacio and Santa Elena. The bridge facilitates traffic, particularly in the downtown area. Traffic flows from Santa Elena to San Ignacio on it while traffic goes in the opposite direction on the Hawkesworth bridge.
When the Low-Lying bridge is being repaired, traffic is diverted to the Santa Elena Bridge which is further away. The Santa Elena Bridge provides a faster way for drivers to move between the twin-town as it doesn’t pass by the downtown area.
